My Warcraft account was hacked?!?!

General PvP Guides & Help

Unbelievable!! I always wondered who the idiots were that get their World of Warcraft accounts hacked into. I mean, if you don’t buy Gold, don’t give you password out, and only install add on’s using Curse.com client then how is it possible? I have firewalls up and Norton System Endpoint virius software always running. I have never been hacked in my 15 years of using a computer. Anyway, this is what happens when your account gets hacked.
You will receive an official email from Blizzard Billing department stating your password was reset. To be on the safe side, IGNORE THIS EMAIL and simply log into your Warcraft account as you normally would. If you are not able to log into your account or if you get a screen that looks like the one below, you’ve been hacked.

Warcraft Authenticator Added

Now, and only now, you can go back to that email and click on the link to contact Blizzard. You need to re-gain control to your World of Warcraft account through the billing Department. My account was hacked around 1:30 PM on July 8th, 2010. I know this because that is the time of the Blizzard email to me. So for me, some time between 3:22 AM and 1:30pm the next day my account was compromized. I called the Blizzard phone number but all lines were busy so I emailed them at billing@blizzard.com. I explained that an authenticator was added to my account and password was changed without my knowledge or approval. This is only as far as I have gotten today. I will update this post more as things happen and explain my Warcraft account hacked experience with as much detail as possible with screen prints and videos so everyone else knows what happens and what it is like. Blizzard deals with this often and I’m sure they have a robust system of dealing with this so although I am upset my account was hacked I am actually more concerned with the “HOW” it was hacked.
If you want to contact your guildies and friends within the game and you use Ventrilo then you can log into Vent and tell them what happened. I just talked to my Guild Master using vent and they already knew something was wrong because he told me I my character was removing high value items from the guild bank and not responding to their messages. He promptly kicked my character from the guild, which is appropriate and he put in a ticket to a GM for me about the incident. He mentioned that when this happend in the past it took a few days but even the items in the guild bank were returned.

I was told that the add-on Curse.com client could be how the hacker was able to get my login information. I uninstalled teh curse client, I will install addons manually from now on. I also performed a full Norton Antivirus scan and used Spybot Search and Destroy (free download) to remove any crap or possible security issues.

7/12/09 – After repeated calls to Blizard billing department I finally got into the quene. I was on hold with their terrible hold music for 55 minutes. Blizzard also realized their backlog of calls and have opened their help lines for weekends too now. When I finally spoke to the representitve I identified myself by my name and email address. The only critical question that she asked me in order to reset the password and remove the authenticator was the “secret question”. So as long as you know your answer to the “Secret Question” then they will remove the authenticator and reset the password.

When the password is reset you will receive an email from Blizzard with a link to reset your password. (Received it in 5 minutes) Reset your passwrod. (Below is example screen, it has the red bar about a ticket since I already did the reset before taking the picture)

After the reset I was able to log in as normal. Thankfully my characters were not deleted. The hacker actually kept all of my soulbound gear but other than that wiped EVERYTHING else from me. From the video below you can see what I was left with. The hacker took all my gold, used all my frost and triumph badges, used 70k of honor points, used 1600 arena points, and left all my bags and inventory totally empty. You could tell the person knew exactly when they were doing and have done it many times before. See the video to see what I experienced when I first logged into my account after being hacked. Here is a video of what I saw when I first logged back in after getting my warcraft account hacked.

So other than a big scare and losing some play time the hacker didn’t do any permanent damage. The hardest part was getting a hold of Blizzard on the phone to regain control of my account. If you have problem just keep calling over and over again until you get through. You can email them but I didn’t receive a response fast enough that way. I recommend calling them. Remember, like the Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy says, “DON’T PANIC!!!”
